The Entry of Christ into Brussels in 1889 by James Ensor.

"The Entry of Christ into Brussels in 1889" is a monumental painting by the Belgian artist James Ensor, completed in 1888. The painting is one of Ensor's most famous works and is considered a masterpiece of Symbolism and early Modernism.

James Ensor was a pivotal figure in the development of modern art. His work, including "The Entry of Christ into Brussels in 1889," anticipated many elements of Expressionism and Surrealism. The painting was initially controversial and not well received, partly due to its size and the provocative nature of its subject matter. Over time, however, it has come to be recognized as a significant and influential work.

The tapestry of the Entry of Christ in Brussels in 1889

Bart Gielen, owner of the Ensor Tapestry firm, decided in 2007 to create the tapestry of the Entry of Christ in Brussels in 1889.

In front of the original painting at the J. Paul Getty Museum (Los Angeles), all shapes and colours of the canvas were transferred onto tracing paper. On the basis of the tracing, the tapestry was hand-knotted in wool and silk in a workshop by craftsman.

After months of intense work, the tapestry was completed in early October 2008.
